The 20-minute monthly money review (with checklist)

10 September 2026 · 5 min read

Why monthly beats daily

Checking your balance every day creates anxiety without insight. One structured review a month gives you the trend, which is the part that actually changes decisions.

The checklist

1. Import last month's statement and confirm the categories. 2. Reconcile balances — accounts, cards, savings. 3. Scan for surprises — new subscriptions, fees, price rises. 4. Check debts — balances down? Rates changed? Instalment plans ending? 5. Check utilisation on each card against your healthy limit. 6. Top up sinking funds for anything due in the next 90 days. 7. Move the surplus to debt or savings before it evaporates. 8. Set next month's plan — known one-offs, bills, income expected.

The three questions to answer

  • Did I spend less than I earned? - Is my expensive debt smaller than last month? - Is anything due in the next 90 days that I have not funded?

If all three are good, the month was a success regardless of how it felt.

Make it pleasant

Same day each month, 20 minutes, a drink, no judgement about individual purchases. Reviews you dread do not happen.

Watch the direction, not the number

Net worth, total debt and monthly essentials are trend metrics. One bad month inside a good trend is noise.

Do it in one place

MoneyQuilt's review flow walks these steps in order — import, confirm, top up, set next month — and keeps last month's recap so you can compare.

Put this into practice

Add your balances, import a statement, and MoneyQuilt does the maths for you.
